Giuliani dismisses Pro-Life activists’ concerns
Former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, has moved even further to the left on the abortion issue. Recently, Giuliani suffered a nine point drop in polls both in primary and general election matchups after reaffirming his support for taxpayer funded abortions, a move sitting poorly with both social conservatives and fiscal conservatives alike. A few days later, he unsuccessfully tried to win back some of the social conservative support by stating his support for government intervention in the Schiavo case. Now his message is that the GOP as a whole must get beyond the abortion issue, which is sure to upset all social conservatives. http://www.lifenews.com/nat3038.html has the story
It is unlikely that even those Pro-Lifers who would be willing to accept Giuliani based on his promise to give “strict constructionist judges” and are also willing to overlook his caveats that such judges could be Pro-Choice like himself, will accept a candidate who wants to change the abortion platform of the GOP. If that happens, it is quite likely there would be a mass exodus from the GOP, perhaps driving the GOP to a long term or even permanent minority party status. A recent CNN poll shows Giuliani’s recent abortion flap has caused his lead over McCain to slip another 10 points to a 3 point lead. http://www.lifenews.com/nat3036.html
